Canals and Railway Stations

Lots of railway lines run near the canals as they shared a common problem, Canal don’t like hills and neither did early Railways trains, so there is a tendency to find them following similar routes.

In one of the groups on Facebook it was suggested that we should includes railway stations that are near the canals on our maps. We had used railway stations in the past as good places to meet up with people coming onboard for this very reason, so this started a new set of locations to add to the maps.

So far we have added 290 railway stations that are near enough to the canals to be useful, they have been added to the Everything Map and any other maps of individual canals, I will update the canal rings maps as I get time.

Latest list of canal maps on the site

It has been about 15 months since we started our mapping project, this is not a navigation aid (but it can help), but a what is near me, where is my nearest XXXX map. So if you need to find something, a Shop, Cafe, Pump-out, Moorings etc we may have the answer.

The maps are all free to use but we do use google ads to help cover the costs.

We have lots more in the works, but these are the ones we feel can be used at the moment.

Canal Links

We have now added a new map icon to our maps, where a canal or river connect we have added a new icon where you see this there is a navigable link to another Canal/River in the popup info we provide links to the appropriate map. We don’t have these added to every canal as yet, but as we add new individual canal maps, we add this links.

NEW – Individual Canal Maps

Some of you may have noticed we have started adding individual canals to our maps so far we have done

These take about a week to complete each, so a lot of work so far, but this has meant we have added a lot of new locations

I know there are lots left to do.

Canal/River Ring Maps

I like the idea of a Canal/River ring, it means I don’t have to come back the same way, everything is new (ish) but like most trips on a new canals I like to do my research before hand so I know some of what I am going to see and do along the way. I do like a suprise and we normally find one or two.

That is where the mapping projects came in I started this so I would know what is ahead, not everything, but essentials like Cafes, Food, Diesel and Pump outs, this has grown to over 3,000 locations and is still growing.

Well over the past couple of months I have added Canal/River Rings to our mapping project, these maps list everything I have found for my other maps, but dedicated to just that ring.

All these maps are sharing a database of locations that is be added to daily, so if you find something new I should have included please let me know you can use our Facebook group to keep in touch.
