Canal Maps Progress Report 2023

Canal maps seem to have taken over during the winter and while I am not playing about with the boat, we have made a significant amount of progress. Soon I hope to return to playing on the boat as we are on the final stages of a Solar Panel project, with just the fitting to go. But cold weather, kids and decorating have meant I needed somthing to do on my laptop so we have had 6 months of mapping.

1100+ Mooring including:- Marinas, CRT Mooring both leisure and permanent, EA Visitor moorings and anything else I could find, thanks to all who submitted theirs.

1000+ Pubs, Restaurants, Cafes, Fish & Chip Shops, Coffee Shops, Tea Shops, Ice Cream Parlours, Pizza Parlours and many many more locations that I wanted to know about.

350+ Services Points, including Pump Outs, Water Points, Diesel and Petrol points, Elsan Points, Showers, Toilets, Calor gas, Solid Fuel and Refuse points. Again stuff we need to know where to find.

And in development but still accessable are:-

Hire Boat Locations – 122 so far

Things to visit near the Canal/River – 63 Atractions

Chandlers and Boat Yards – 47 Locations

Location buttonWe have also added a button on each map that will try to locate you on the map, so you can see what is nearby.

Facebook Group – At last count we have 4200 members of this group, which we hope will use the maps as well as contribute to them, it is also the best place to contact me.

We have had a few recommendations from users including the location of Petrol stations near the canals for the outboard users, the location of Charging points for the Electric Boat users, both of which will be researched and added.

Now looking forward to a few trips out this year, before we take the big one (for us) and spend a year traveling on the canals and rivers could be 2025/2026 if all goes to plan.

Geolocation Button Added (testing)

Following a suggestion from a member of the CanalWorld.net forum, I have added a new button on the Canal and River Marinas and Moorings map, this button will get you current location from your browser (if possible) and locate you on the map (It will put a blue dot where is thinks you are).

It would be great if you could test this feature and let me know if it works for you.

Geolocation Button

If this works, I will added it to the other maps

Finding New Locations for Maps

We are nearly at 2000 members of our Facebook Group, can I make a request, please visit one of the maps for an area you know well and find what is missing?

I need to find Visitor Mooring, Chandleries, Boat Yards, Water and Pump Out points, Pubs, Restaurants, Cafes, and any place of interest you would recommend. If each of us found 1 extra place that would double what we have already 🙂

See https://floydtilla.co.uk/canal-river-maps/

Don’t forget we also have the everything map https://floydtilla.co.uk/they-everything-map/ were you can find all the place we have so far, but it loads a little slower.

Thanks

David Floyd

October’s 2023 Canal Map Updates

During October we added over 300 new places to our maps, a lot of work goes into making sure we do not duplicate current locations, as many have more that one name depending on who is writing about it so it is hard process to automate.

Everything map

October was made up of roughly

1 – Art Gallery
5 – Cocktail Bars
103 – Pubs/Bars
41 – Coffee Shops/Cafes
5 – Fast food Restaurants
2 – Ice cream Shops
36 – Mooring Locations
3 – Workshops/Repair
3 – Fish Restaurants
73 – Restaurants
13 – Boater Services Points
11 – Visitor Mooring Points

The requirement for these is that they are within easy reach of the canal/river network. During November we hope to reach a total of over 2000 locations mapped in total

New Map – Pubs, Bars, Restaurants, Coffee Shops and Tea rooms

We have new map, while building the other maps, we had found lots of other interesting places, our collection of Pub, Restaurants and Coffee/Tea shops has now reached 500 locations, so here is the first version released.

I suspect we may have missed your favourite Pub, Bar, Restaurant, or coffee shop so please let me know using our online form, please include the name and Postcode or Coordinates or What3words location and we will hunt it down.

This is a totally free to use resource, it does not cost to use or be listed here, it is done out of my interests, and it keeps my mind working  🙂
